What is a boot scooter?
A boot scooter is the term used to describe a mobility scooter which can be disassembled and placed in the boot of a car. They are small scooters with a basic seat and simple controls. Boot scooters generally have a top speed of 4mph. Generally they have a 6 mile range on a full battery. To charge them you simply plug them in.
Do mobility scooters take long to charge?
It takes approx. 4-5 hours to fully charge the battery. It is most important to keep the battery charged at all times. We recommend that you plug in your scooter daily and allow it to fully charge. You cannot over charge the battery.
Do I need insurance to drive a boot scooter?
No. You do not need insurance to use a boot scooter. These scooters have a top speed of 4mph and do not require any user insurance.
Do I need to have a driving licence in order to use a boot scooter?
No, not at all. There is no licence required to drive any mobility scooter as they do not tend to exceed speeds of 8mph. Boot scooters are even slower than this with top speeds of 4mph.
Can I use a mobility scooter indoors?
Yes, you can definitely use it indoors. They are brilliant for getting around shopping centres, clinics and hospitals.
Can I use my mobility scooter on a bus or train?
Yes, as this is a mobility aid you are absolutely entitled to use it on public transport. This works the very same way a wheelchair would. You can stay in the wheelchair accessible area on a bus, train or LUAS.
I use a wheelchair but would like to rent a scooter for a few weeks. Are transfers difficult?
It is not at all difficult to transfer from a mobility scooter into a wheelchair or car. A boot scooter has a swivel seat so you can transfer easily. Simply pull the lever below your seat to turn your seat outwards.
Are mobility scooters easy to use?
Mobility scooters are quite easy to control. To operate you just hold down the leaver. As soon as you let go of the lever the mobility scooter will stop. There is no brake that you need to operate. You simply take your hand off the control to stop moving.
